Yesterday, I get a message from a dear friend of mine, Dave. He sends me a message “call me now” and the message includes a picture of him holding a rainbow trout. The croakers are here, just in time for the 4th of July weekend. The Reliable II out of Bowers Beach is fishing daily, and Shirley said that they are “slamming” the croakers. We’re getting reports of the smallmouth action heating up everywhere. These coldwater bronzebacks seem to be taken in the northeast and the Mid-Atlantic states, with some smallmouths up to six pounds being caught. Shirley aboard the Reliable II said that Sunday morning started off with lots of Headboater enthusiasts who had one thing on their mind — winning the Reliable’s June Mega Monster Cash Pot Contest. Shirley aboard the Reliable out of Bowers Beach, Delaware recently told us about the boat’s “Mega Monster Cash Pot Contest” This is doing really well and everyone is so excited about it. The pool increases every day of the month, and is currently up to $160. The next monthly cash pot should be well [...] Anglers continue to catch good numbers of striped bass in Raritan Bay. Jason Wavro fished aboard the Fin Chaser and got into good numbers of blues, then nailed a number of stripers, including this one. Jason said that they ended up catching some keeper linesiders as well as shorts. Great work. On a productive day, you can land as many rockfish as you’d like in the Narrows. The average size of the stripers that live here varies from 15 to 25 inches on average, with some larger landings. As with any location, there are some monsters lurking in the Narrows; and on occasion, 45-inch stripers are [...] You can land plenty of blackfish or tautog without even leaving the docks. I sure have. One time, I missed the boat because my alarm clock did not go off. By the time I got down to the boat dock, the party boat was pulling away. Most anglers understand why there are minimum limits on fish, particularly in freshwater. Without these limits, the fish would be more susceptible to overfishing, reducing the number of the species and threatening their demise.
