Arizona Urban Fishing Report: Catfish Abound

Fishing has been good to excellent for catfish at all lakes, according to the Arizona Game and Fish Department. Best baits for the two pound average cats include worms, shrimp and stink baits fished along the bottom.

Alvord Lake and Evelyn Hallman Pond did not get stocked with catfish as scheduled on May 21. The next catfish stocking will take place the week of June 1-5 at all Phoenix and Tucson area Urban waters.

Bluegill fishing is good at all lakes for anglers using worms or mealworms fished under a small bobber in 3-6 foot depths.
Fishing for bass has slowed, but is expected to improve in the cool of the morning.

At Green Valley lakes (Payson) fishing for trout has slowed, but is very good for crappie, bluegill, bass and catfish. Try small marabou jigs or curly tail grubs for the sunfish and bass. Worms are working for everything.

STOCKING SCHEDULE
All UFP waters in Phoenix area and Tucson area – Last stocked on May 21 with catfish. Next stocking, catfish, the week of June 1-5.
Green Valley Lakes (Payson) – Last stocked on May 7 with trout – last of the spring stockings. No further stockings until October trout deliveries resume.

Arizona Free Fishing Days Slated for June 5 & 12

Arizona has scheduled its annual free fishing days for June 5 and 12 as part of National Fishing and Boating Week.

On these Saturdays, no fishing license is required for persons fishing any of the Urban Fishing Program lakes or other statewide public waters.

Many waters in Arizona are scheduled for fish stockings. Remember that bag limits and other fishing regulations are in full effect and must be observed on Free Fishing Day.

Kids under the age of 14 can fish for free all year long in Arizona, so this special fishing license exemption day means that the older kids and parents get a free pass for the day. Continue reading Arizona Free Fishing Days Slated for June 5 & 12

WV DNR Stock Channel Catfish in Local Lakes

West Virginia’s Division of Natural Resources stocked over 6,700 catchable-size channel catfish into 23 lakes during mid-May, according to Frank Jezioro, DNR Director. “The goal of this stocking program is to provide fishing opportunities at some of our more accessible lakes for folks to enjoy. Results of previous introductions indicate that stocked channel catfish are caught throughout the summer and that families and young anglers comprise a substantial number of those fishing for catfish,” said Jezioro.

Lakes that the DNR stocked include: Anawalt Lake (McDowell County), Barboursville Lake (Cabell County), Berwind Lake (McDowell County), Cedar Creek State Park Lake (Gilmer County), Chief Logan State Park Lake (Logan County), Conaway Run Lake (Tyler County), Coopers Rock Lake (Monongalia County), French Creek Pond (Upshur County), Handley Pond (Pocahontas County), Hurricane Lake (Putnam County), Krodel Lake (Mason County), Laurel Lake (Mingo County), Little Beaver State Park Lake (Raleigh County), Mason Lake (Monongalia County), Mountwood Lake (Wood County), North Bend State Park Pond (Ritchie County), Parker Hollow Lake (Hardy County), Pendleton Lake at Blackwater Falls State Park (Tucker County), Pipestem State Park Lake (Summers County), Tomlinson Run Lake (Hancock County), Wallback Lake (Clay County), Watoga State Park Lake (Pocahontas County), and Wirt County Pond (Wirt County).

Tagged channel catfish were stocked into Coopers Rock Lake, Mason Lake, and Mountwood Lake to assess angler participation and catch rates. If you catch a tagged fish, the DNR asks that you return the tag or tag number along with information on the date of capture, if the fish was kept or released, and the name and address of the angler to WVDNR, 2311 Ohio Ave, Parkersburg, WV 26101. Anglers also can call in the information (304-420-4550) or provide the information via e-mail (fishtags@wvdnr.gov).

Lake Powell Fishing Report: Action Heats Up with Warming Weather

Wayne Gustavsen of the Utah Division of Fish & Wildlife recently reported on Lake Powell:

Warming had the expected effect. Bass reoccupied nests that were abandoned during the cold spell. Bass nests were found along much of the shoreline this week. Typically there is a row of brush sticking out of the water in the coves. Largemouth nests will be between the shore and the brush while smallmouth nests will be on the deep water side of the brush line. Largemouth make their nest close to the base of the bush. Smallmouth nests will more likely be on open rock areas.

This week will mark the last chance for sight-fishing spawning bass. When the current fry crop swims away from the nest, the bass spawn will be over. Bass will then go deeper and head for feeding areas. They will be hungry and perhaps even more willing to eat angled offerings. The compounding factor is that fast rising lake level will make it harder to find the sweet spots. Continue reading Lake Powell Fishing Report: Action Heats Up with Warming Weather

Seaside Park Fishing Report: Hot Striper and Blues Fishing All Around

The spring run is fully “on” in Central Jersey right now. Anglers are slamming the stripers and bluefish in Seaside Park and down through Island Beach State Park. We have yet to hear anything from up north around Sandy Hook, or further south, but come back soon and we’ll provide reports.

The bunker schools are solid this year, and the stripers and bluefish are capitalizing on these schools of menhaden. We recommend you get out there and capitalize on some great fishing.

Stay tuned and we’ll keep you up-to-date.

The fishing’s hot, so get out there and fish.

When you’re hiking in the backcountry, a fishing rod can be a real space-taker. This doesn’t mean you don’t want to be prepared, however, when stumbling across a fish-filled stream. Enter this mini fishing rod pen, a pen-sized pole that can catch fish as large as 4 pounds.

The fishing rod pen measures a mere 8 inches long.

The fishing rod pen may look like a toy, but it’s a real rod, with a stainless-steel reel that offers a forward and reverse ratchet stop, a drag control, and a casting brake. To use, simply open the pen rod by taking off the cap, insert the reel between the two grooves on the pen, and twist the screw down to tighten the reel on the rod. The fishing rod pen’s most striking feature, however, is its small size. It measures only 8 inches long when closed and extends to 37 inches when open. As a result, you can fit the pen in your jacket pocket, an accessory pocket, and pretty much anywhere else. It’s the perfect gadget for all your spur-of-the-moment fishing needs.

The fishing rod pen–which offers a capacity of 120 yards on a 5-pound line and a 5:1 gear ratio–also includes hooks.
