One of the most popular species of fish to catch is the flounder. In this video, Dr. Jim Wright shows you the tricks to catching flounder.
You’ll learn the best tackle, hooks and bait to use, as well as where to go and different techniques for fishing in the surf, from a pier, a jetty or on the open water.
If you’re fluke fishing (or summer flounder fishing), you may want to try this setup. One manufacturer shows how to use their lures in this post. According to the manufacturer, “this Flounder fishing and Fluke fishing rig is truly the perfect one.”
The croakers are here, just in time for the 4th of July weekend. The Reliable II out of Bowers Beach is fishing daily, and Shirley said that they are “slamming” the croakers.
She also said that several short flounder are also coming over the rails, and Walter Leashefski one 2.10-pound keeper that took the pool She said that some sea bass and blues were also caught. The Reliable is sailing daily at 7:00 a.m. and our Headboat price is $40.00 for a 7 hour trip.
Shirley aboard the Reliable II said that Sunday morning started off with lots of Headboater enthusiasts who had one thing on their mind — winning the Reliable’s June Mega Monster Cash Pot Contest.
The June Mega Monster Cash Pot had jumped to $149.00. Several flounder shorts were caught and a heartbreaking almost close legal flounder was caught by Fay Griffith, which was 18 1/4″ long and thrown back.
Not a one croaker was caught or even seen. Finally, cries of “Fish On” broke the silence. Fay Griffith from Seaford, Delaware hooked into a big one. At first, she thought it was a skate, because it did not want to come off of the bottom. Continue reading Bower's Beach Flounder Action Continues

Most anglers understand why there are minimum limits on fish, particularly in freshwater. Without these limits, the fish would be more susceptible to overfishing, reducing the number of the species and threatening their demise. State conservation departments, such as the New Jersey Division of Fish and Game and Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, can control the numbers of freshwater fish. Controlling the numbers of saltwater fish, however, is not always as easy.
Many of us cannot understand why controlling saltwater fish stocks is not as easy. Although the fish have an ocean full of water to navigate, they still have the same habits and stay in the same places, right? This is partially right. Some, if not most, fish have certain habits – go south when the cold weather comes, then back north when water temperatures warm. Continue reading Minimum Sizes Don't Always Mean Overfishing
Now that the cold weather months are here, winter flounder inhabit much of the bay and river waters found in northern and central New Jersey. Although winter flounder used to inhabit waters as far south as Delaware Bay, past years has seen the winter flounder move its wintering grounds north. Now, many say that Barnegat Bay is the furthest south that most will find winter flounder.
I personally do not believe this, and know many South Jersey sharpies that know where to catch blackbacks (as they call them) in the backwater. Talk to Captain Al Crudele about this, or reach out to George Brennan at Brennan Marine and ask him where to go to catch winter flounder in South Jersey. They’re there, I tell you.
The Summer heat continues to dry many freshwater fisheries, but saltwater fishing action is now reaching its peak. For the angler who is looking for decent light tackle saltwater fishing, summer flounder offers fine angling in bays and inland waters.
Often called “fluke,” summer flounder invade bays, inlets, rivers, and inshore lumps. These bottom-dwelling fish prefer water ranging from 20 to 50 feet, but can sometimes be found in shallower (and deeper) water. Continue reading Summer Flounder Fishing Is A Fine Excursion
