Do you want to catch world record fish only a couple of hours run from port? Do you want to head offshore and hit the places where 800-pound bluefin tuna and most state records are set? Ready to catch doormat flounder and cow rockfish? Indian River Inlet in Delaware is where you want to go.

Located just a few miles north of Ocean City, Maryland, Indian River offers great inshore and offshore fishing for the angler. The inlet itself contains resident rockfish, tog and hickory shad inhabiting its waters nearly year-round. Bluefish, sea trout and flounder can be found in spring, summer and fall, with some of them being choppers, tiderunners and doormats, respectively.

Heading just a couple of miles out of the inlet reveals great tog, sea bass, flounder and croaker action. The Old Grounds, B Buoy and Reef Site 11 are all found off the Delaware coast, and this water provides plenty of big flatties for anglers.
The water is productive year-round for anglers looking to fish the bottom, with both sea bass and tog being caught through the year. Some charter boats run for tog year-round and land plenty of tog in January, February and March.

Further offshore, Indian River’s boats fish for shark and pelagics, including tuna, mahi mahi, marlin and wahoo. The charter boats are within striking distance of all offshore canyons. Hotspots along the 30 Fathom Line, including the Hot Dog and Sausage Lumps are all regular stops for these boats. Daily catches of multiple bluefin and yellowfin tuna, marlin, wahoo and mahi mahi are not uncommon.

THE INDIAN RIVER FLEET
Indian River boasts a fleet of over 35 head and charter boats all in one place. Angling never stops for these captains as they have access to the fast and furious fishing and aggressively participate. Most of the charter boats will run inshore and offshore trips, with others being more specialized than others.

BIG GAME HUNTERS
Many of the captains in the Indian River fleet also fish in many of the major tournaments that are held in the area, including the White Marlin Open,
Mid-Atlantic $500,000
and other important tournaments. These trips that they run earn their parties big money when the fishing is good and productive, and the fleet takes its share of the winnings.

In addition, the group also holds several inshore and offshore tournaments per year, including the Bluefish, Shark, Tuna Trolling, Marlin Release and Inshore/Offshore Tournaments, held on Memorial and Labor Days and Fourth Of July, as well as on other weekends. The events encourage participation from all groups and culminate with a picnic at the end of the event.

DESTINATION INDIAN RIVER
Most that are looking to head to Indian River and fish out of the port will find that the trip is within driving distance. If you’re looking to stay there, the many resort towns, including Bethany, Rehoboth, Dewey and Lewes, surround the marina. Staying in these towns is affordable during the summer season, but you’ll experience rock-bottom room rates after Labor Day or before Memorial Day.
Ready to get in on this world-class fishery for any species that the mid-Atlantic offers? Indian River awaits you.
